EATING FRUITS .......

(I got this in an email from a friend in Alaska. I've heard much of this before, so why not share it? If drinking hot tea after a meal, or eating fruit before a meal is better for our health, why not give it a try?)

It's long but very informative

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.

So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining - every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet etc - actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will not happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene - the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can you believe this? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup, warm water or warm beer after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!) Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack . Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive...

Weight Loss

There hasn't been much said on weight loss lately being as each time I've stepped on the scale, it hasn't moved. I don't count this as a bad thing, mind you, but it's not much to blog about.

So, this morning I stepped on it again and was surprised to see it read 2 lbs less than what it has been! Woot! (After a dentist appointment last weekend I've been having a hard time swallowing without pain, so the 2 lbs lost may be attributed to this, but I'll still gladly claim the loss.)

It's only taken me 5 months+ to lose 9 lbs. Oy! I'm in trouble. Cabbage rolls, veggie enchiladas, and spinach galore without much to show for it? Sure, it's nice to know we're eating healthier, but there has to be more to it than this.

Monster Kid returns home this weekend. She's already told me over the phone that she wants to start riding bikes and going on walks again. I don't know if that was just a fleeting thought as we talked on the phone but I'm hoping I can hold her to it.

Outside of the new and improved diet, and adding walking in to the regime again, what can you suggest to help speed the weight loss process along?

This Just In!

NBC -- 22,000 cartons of romaine lettuce distributed by Tanimura and Antle of Salinas, California are being recalled by the company.

The product "may" be contaminated with salmonella.

The cartons were harvested from June 25th to July 2nd and are marked with the code 5-3-1-3-8-0

So far, there have been no reports of anyone getting sick and the lettuce is likely no longer on store shelves.

The company was notified by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture that a randomly tested box tested at a wholesale distribution center had tested positive for salmonella.

Within hours, T&A contacted all affected customers to pull the 22,000 cartons of its bulk or wrapped lettuce products from the shelves.

T&A says the recalled romaine is well past its 14-16 day shelf life, and don't believe its any still exists in the marketplace. But the company still advises caution."

The company says there are no reported illnesses, and are using an abundance of caution, saying "We want to minimize any possible risk to public health."

The recall coincides with food safety legislation currently moving through Congress.

The Line

When I was in high school, my friends and I were big fans of Little Caesars, home of, and I quote, "Pizza Pizza." In the early 90s, they always sold pizza in these big and somewhat cumbersome long boxes, that had two pizzas side-by-side. That was part of their gimmick; the rest was that their two pizzas were priced comparably to one pizza at most other places. The pizza wasn't all that hot, but we were in high school; "cheap" was generally a higher priority than "good."

Somewhere between "I graduated from high school" and "I had to move back in with my mother" nine years later, they closed up. The food was pretty mediocre, so I don't think I missed it too much.

Sometimes, you don't know how much you missed something until it came back. Today was the grand opening of a new Little Caesars location, just a few blocks from the old one (which now is, I believe, a bank). Nowadays, their gimmick is the "Hot & Ready," where you can just stop in anytime and grab a large pizza for about five bucks. Between "cheap food" and the fact that it was their grand opening, there probably were a dozen cars (or more) in their parking lot this evening, and a line of people well out the door.

Five bucks for a large pizza. Not a bad deal, but it definitely isn't the best food from that all-important "nutrition" standpoint. A single slice of their hot-and-ready pepperoni pizza is almost 300 calories, and it's not the most filling pie (as befits such an inexpensive product, the toppings are a bit scarce); it's easy to get to a thousand calories and not even know it.

Happy Birthday, Fisher

Today Fisher turns 41 (but he'll tell you he's 33... don't let him fool you). At my location (if you remember we work at the same company but different locations) we are having a birthday brunch celebration for the July birthdays. I made something to bring in to work but nothing for Fisher yet. He likes Mexican food, so I'm making Spinach & Broccoli enchiladas from Taste of Home dot com.

METHOD: Baked

TIME: Prep: 25 min. Bake: 25 min.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1 package (10 ounces) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
  • 1 cup finely chopped fresh broccoli
  • 1 cup picante sauce, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 cup (8 ounces) 1% cottage cheese
  • 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese, divided
  • 8 flour tortillas (8 inches), warmed

Directions:

In a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook and stir onion in oil until tender. Add the spinach, broccoli, 1/3 cup picante sauce, garlic powder and cumin; heat through.
Remove from the heat; stir in cottage cheese and 1/2 cup cheddar cheese. Spoon about 1/3 cup spinach mixture down the center of each tortilla. Roll up and place seam side down in a 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish coated with cooking spray. Spoon remaining picante sauce over the top.
Cover and bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until heated through. Uncover; sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake 5 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Yield: 8 servings.

Edit: I'm being lazy tonight and ordered Steak Out for dinner instead. =) Enchiladas will be for tomorrow night when the spinach is done thawing.
